Inflammation Reduction

  • Howatson et al. (2010) – Randomised trial with 20 recreational marathon runners consuming tart cherry juice 5 days before, on the day of, and 48 hours after a marathon.

  • Howatson et al. (2012) – Double‑blind crossover with 20 healthy adults consuming tart Montmorency cherry concentrate for 7 days, measured with actigraphy.

  • Findings: The cherry group showed significant improvements in total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and melatonin levels.

  • Levers et al. (2016) – Controlled trial with 27 trained endurance athletes (runners/triathletes) supplementing with tart cherry powder for 10 days around a half‑marathon.

  • Findings: The cherry group finished ~13% faster than placebo and showed lower post‑run inflammation.
